This is a charge placed on top of each stage of manufacturing and distribution of goods, which is then passed on to the consumers. In the United Kingdom, there are three kinds of rates for VAT, standard, reduced and zero rate. The reduced rate of added tax is payable on certain items, which include the installation of energy-saving materials like insulation, women's sanitary products, and children's car seats, to name some. Zero rate is applicable on certain categories of products, such as food, reading materials, children's clothes, and public transport, among others. On the other hand, finance and education services as well as those that involve selling or leasing commercial properties are outside the scope of the VAT system.
